Hey all,
As an incoming student I was curious how many of you brought laptops to class for notetaking, internet stuff, etc. I know there are carols with computers that are assigned to us, but I wondered how useful a laptop might be----(imperative? helpful? a luxury?) Anyone with advise?

I just bought a macbook and absolutely love it! It's a little pricey but well worth it.
I got a Dell the summer after my 1st year. I would say it was a luxury because I could use the 1st year MPH lab do finish things but sometimes you just don't want to be in the lab that much or late at night! A laptop is definitely nice to have, especially for your project. After I bought my Dell, I kind of wished I had gotten a Mac because I had problems, although it is more expensive. A good thing though, is that you can get SAS and other programs downloaded onto a PC. Graduate students can get those programs for free but they aren't for Mac. SAS might be good to have when you have biostats 2nd semester. I didn't have that and I survived but I know many people did and they could do homework and tests at home instead of being in the 1st year MPH lab. Also, it might be a good thing to have 2nd year because there aren't computers for each person in that lab. But, that depends on how much your cohorts use them as well.
