This position is with the Division of Disease Control and Prevention, Bureau of Heath Promotion. Coordinate and oversee surveillance and evaluation efforts of the Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Program (PANO). Coordinate and perform disease control and prevention studies including surveillance, observation, hypothesis testing, analytical research and experiments to determine cause and/or trends of disease and other health-related events. Provide epidemiologic and evaluation consultation to program staff and partners (e.g., Action for Healthy Kids, State Office of Education, etc.), and the public. Provide epidemiologic design,management and analytic consultation to ongoing and newly proposed studies and evaluations. Contribute to program surveillance and evaluation efforts at a state and local level, by gathering, entering, managing, and analyzing data, summarizing findings, and developing reports. Conduct literature reviews on the effectiveness of various program efforts, study design, and other topics as needed; summarize and present findings. Identify or design, and administer evaluation instruments and survey databases. Plan, design, and conduct evaluation projects.

National PTA Job

he nation's largest child advocacy association, National PTA, currently has an opening for a Health & Safety Manager. The Health & Safety Manager will be responsible managing the development, promotion and implementation of National PTA health and safety programs. The health and safety programs span many risk areas such as: obesity, unintentional injury, social and emotional wellness, bullying, and communicable diseases. The manager also leads relationship development with key national partners and strategic collaborations. He/she will represent the National PTA on numerous national advisory committees for health and safety partners. In addition, he/she will support resource development and fundraising efforts for health and safety program strategies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Duties are illustrative and not inclusive and may vary with individual assignments):
  • Manages the Healthy Lifestyles Program by developing and disseminating program strategies to local PTAs nationwide; providing technical assistance to PTAs; and facilitating health-related grant programs for PTAs.
  • Leads the strategic thinking and development of Healthy Lifestyles Month in November each year.  Supports other PTA departments in executing related promotions.
  • Develops new programs, materials and resources to support PTA’s health and safety efforts, especially related to bullying prevention.
  • Serves as in-house expert on content or programming related to child health and safety (internet, cell phone, bullying, etc.), as needed.
  • Manages content on relevant pages on www.pta.org.   
  • Provides ongoing training and technical assistance to state and local PTAs through in-person visits, e-leanings, workshops, e-newsletters, conference calls/webinars, and other mechanisms in order to build their capacity.
  • Develops tools, resources, and guides to support the implementation of PTA’s programs, campaigns and initiatives. Will develop content for PTA promotions, talking points, press releases, etc.
  • Provides high-quality customer service to PTA members and leaders.
  • Identifies, communicates and disseminates best practices to PTA leaders and members. Writes issue briefs and other reports.
  • Identifies, understands and is able to integrate current research and innovations from the field on health, wellness, and safety into PTA’s programs and initiatives.
  • Prepares and monitors project timelines and budgets.
  • Leads the development and implementation of partnerships.
  • Represents PTA at meetings, conferences and advisory committees, as needed. 
  • Supports strategies to raise funds for health and safety programs.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Training on program development and evaluation strategies, including the use of logic models and survey instruments.
  • Proven success developing and growing a national health or safety program.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills are required.  Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be detail oriented and be able to establish and maintain deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Initiative, drive and attention to detail are required, as well as the ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office is required, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
  • Some travel is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A master’s degree in public health, public relations, public affairs, education, or other related field 
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in program development and management is required.
  • Experience leading development of new programs or initiatives is required.
  • Experience and training for child health, wellness and safety required
  • Experience supporting resource development for programs is desired.
  • Experience working with volunteers in a non-profit setting and knowledge of parent/family involvement issues is desired.
