POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Health Policy
is a member of the core SOPHE staff.
This role leads SOPHE’s federal advocacy activities that address and
promote public health education programs, supports SOPHE volunteer committees,
and supports cooperative agreement efforts related to policy, systems, and
environmental change.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead SOPHE’s federal advocacy activities that address and promote
public health education programs, such as:
§ Create
and distribute electronic policy alerts to members
§ Organize
and coordinate Hill briefings
§ Collaborate
with other public health organizations on joint advocacy agendas
§ Develop
and enhance relationships with House and Senate staffers
§ Track
and report federal public health policy activities
§ Staff
SOPHE’s advocacy and resolutions committees

Provide leadership to planning advocacy training
efforts in conjunction with SOPHE Advocacy Committee and partner
organizations.
§ Provide
strategic advice and leadership in terms of advocacy positioning, message
development, targeted outreach.
§ Oversee
logistics for hosting in-person or virtual trainings.
§ Collaborate
with appropriate staff to ensure advocacy training opportunities are marketed
to broad audiences.

Support SOPHE Committees responsible for advocacy, resolutions, and

coordination of logistics and participate in the committee meetings and
activity planning conference calls.
o Generate
committee correspondence and minutes and respond to inquiries as requested by
the committee chair.
o Prepare
reports for SOPHE Board of Trustees based on activities of the professional
development committee.
Ethics Committee
o Oversee
coordination of logistics and participate in the committee meetings and
activity planning conference calls.
o Support
committee chair by preparing reports for SOPHE Board of Trustees based on committee
activities.

Support SOPHE’s development activities and other duties as assigned.
§ Research
and vet federal, local, and private foundation funding opportunities.
§ Assist
in the development of proposals in response to funding opportunity requests.
§ Share
expertise on PSE change with staff supporting CDC cooperative agreements.

Qualifications
§ Excellent organizational,
writing and public speaking skills
§ Strong working knowledge of
Congress and regulatory agencies
§ Preferably, experience
working with federal legislative staff and organizing Hill briefings
§ Sound knowledge of health
disparities, public health promotion and community health efforts
§ Demonstrated experience in
working with coalitions for policy/systems change
§ Experience working with
coalitions, boards, committees or workgroups
§ Ability to work and reason
independently, as well as within a team
§ Certified Health Education
Specialist a plus
§ Ability to travel
