The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency's immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.

Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency's ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.   

BACKGROUND:

In cooperation with the US Department of State's Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator, other US Government (USG) partners, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency's HIV/AIDS programs. In this endeavor, USAID works very closely with a range of USG agencies involved in the fight against AIDS, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Peace Corps. INTRODUCTION:

The Public Affairs Intern will be assigned to the Public Affairs (PA) Team in the Front Office of the Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) in the Bureau for Global Health. OHA provides technical leadership, expertise, strategic direction and implementation support to country teams that receive PEPFAR funding for HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support programs. The Front Office is in charge of management, leadership and communications functions and serves as a coordinating body with the interagency and other external stakeholders, as well as the GH front office and other bureaus at USAID.

The Intern will primarily provide support to the PA Team, which is responsible for all internal and external communications activities for OHA. The PA team is a growing, dynamic, fast-paced and proactive team that communicates and represents OHA in both internal and external settings.  S/he will work closely with the entire Team, as well as other members of the OHA technical team, providing proactive and reactive support on a variety of communication tasks. S/he will receive day to day guidance from the Public Affairs Advisor as his/her onsite manager.  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Gaining a greater understanding of PEPFAR and international projects specific to HIV/AIDS.
• Gaining experience in public affairs and communications work surrounding HIV/AIDS.
• Gaining a solid understanding of strategic communications principles and how to implement them within a USG setting.
• Developing deep skills in collaboration, coordination and navigation to achieve results within a complex organizational structure.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assisting with digital and online-related communications tasks, including updates to the website, social media and blogs.
• Providing support around major observances/conferences/events, including World AIDS Day 2014.
• Assisting with media relations activities, including a media audit, compiling and maintaining a master media list and conducting outreach, as needed.
• Assisting with collateral development, including success stories, blogs, press releases and presentations.
• Assisting in maintaining important trackers utilized for reporting purposes.
• Assisting with research, message development and report writing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Currently enrolled senior in a bachelor's degree program; or, completion of such a program within the past 24 months.
• Strong interest in strategic communications, public affairs and the public relations discipline.
• Strong organizational, inter-personnel, and oral and written communication skills.
• US Citizenship or US permanent residency required.

COMPENSATION:

$15.52 per hour (non-exempt, hourly wage position).

POSITION SUMMARY: The mission of CHC is to improve access to medical and dental care for Utah County residents who are uninsured.  To that end the Executive Director provides leadership in achieving CHC philosophy and mission, strategic direction, goals and objectives, ensures the fiscal stability of the program, and responds to the trends in health care.  He/she is responsive to the needs of the consumer, and manages the staff and the programs.  He/she is familiar with public health services policies and requirements.  He/she demonstrates community-based networking and develops collaborative relationships with other health and welfare organizations.

The Board of Directors is looking for a dynamic, motivated individual to lead the board and staff in accomplishing the organization’s mission. The Executive Director is appointed by and responsible to the Board of Trustees as the Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation and is charged with providing overall leadership, direction and administration of the operations of the Community Health Connect (CHC) in accordance with policies established by the Board of Trustees.  The Executive Director has the authority to both employ and discharge personnel consistent with the Personnel Policies and Procedures of the CHC.

                                                                                                                                               

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education Required: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a health-related field, accounting or business administration. Preference for a Masters degree in related field.

Experience Required:  Proven capabilities in the areas of health care management, fiscal management, marketing strategy, long-range planning, organization, self-motivation, time management, monitoring and evaluation, personnel management, program development and implementation, quality control, fiscal reporting and grant writing.  Has previous work experience focused on the social-economic and health care problems of low-income groups in the service delivery area and of Medicaid/Medicare beneficiaries.

Other Qualifications:  Prefer experience and familiarity with public health service funded programs. An understanding of relationships among primary, secondary and tertiary care providers (i.e. referral arrangements, contractual payment mechanisms.) Demonstrated experience with not-for-profit Boards of Trustees and an understanding of the principles of non-profit corporate governance. Ability to communicate effectively, in written and oral form, with staff, clients, community representatives, government agencies, other health care providers and the Board of Trustees.  

Compenstaion: Salary commensurate with experience. Full benefits package including medical, dental, retirement. Full time exempt position.
