JDRF Walk for Cure Diabetes

Dear BYU Friends,

I hope you are all doing well. It has been far too long since I have seen most of you. I am still full-time at UVU, starting my sixth year and going up for tenure there. Time flies, doesn't it?
As many of you know, I spend my summer breaks advocating and fundraising for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). I have been very impressed by the organization and the research that they have funded. Obviously, it is a personal issue for me. While living with diabetes has gotten slightly easier now that Lyla can talk and express how she feels, it is still a full-time job to keep her blood sugar where it should be and administer insulin for everything she eats. I have had a lot of scary moments and lost a lot of sleep over the last two and a half years, but am grateful that she is still with us.

Again this year, we are participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes on September 7 at the Riverwoods in Provo. I invite you to come walk with our team and show your support. We are also fundraising as a team and ask for a small donation if you are able. Any amount is appreciated and every dollar helps to find a cure for type one diabetes.

Liahona Children's Foundation Fieldwork

The Liahona Children’s Nutrition and Education Foundation (LCF) is an NGO dedicated to the alleviation of malnutrition and illiteracy in LDS children and their friends.  In June 2013, LCF signed a contract with the Universidad Nacional de Piura (UNP) in Piura, Peru, to collaborate on malnutrition work in that region where an estimated 50,000 children are malnourished.  The contract envisions providing nutritional support to 2000 malnourished children in three diverse communities over a period of three years, with hope to expand coverage as funding allows.  As part of that contract, we are pleased to invite students and professors to consider the following opportunities:

• Two funded master’s thesis/projects, including a $500/month stipend with paid flights and room/board, from a semester minimum to a full year maximum
• One funded Doctoral project (or university professor research project), including $1500/month with paid flights and room/board.  Doctoral thesis would preferentially involve either: 
• A comparison of the effect of different nutritional supplementation and/or a local “kitchen”-based option where the parents bring the children to a kitchen daily for lunch.
• Development of a nutritional supplement for country-wide use in Peru using the specifications (but not manufacturing process) for the failed “Vaso de Leche” program.
• Unfunded opportunities also available for undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.

Many other research or service projects are possible and will be considered. Other duties, theses or projects may include:

• ·      Writing grant applications in order to obtain nutritional supplements for the malnourished children
• ·      Giving direction to the implementation of the project on the ground at the local health centers and governmental agencies responsible for same and direct participation via working hands-on with children and families.
• ·      Working with UNP School of Medicine faculty to oversee the project
• ·      Working with the 30 or so LDS stake-based projects in Peru, Ecuador, Guatemala and Cambodia which are currently serving 1500 children for nutritional support and elementary education.
• ·      Development of inclusion/exclusion criteria and nutritional supplement dose for different levels/type of malnutrition.
• ·      Development of educational materials for use with families and coordinators (or promoters) related to family nutrition and hygiene.
• ·      Conduct dietary analysis of families in different areas to compare/contrast and provide recommendations to improve local available nutritional sources.
• ·      Development and implementation of a program to care for moderate/severe acute malnutrition (MAM/SAM) in the community and stake-based programs.
• ·      Participation in fund-raising and awareness activities on behalf of children from either community or stake-based projects, including documentation of malnutrition problem and development and maintenance of social media/website related to the projects.
• ·      Examining determinants of malnutrition and poverty outcomes
• ·      Recommendation/selection of nutritional supplements comparing price, value, availability, stability, and palatability, and determining best distribution method(s) of same.
• ·      Determining/evaluating children not attending elementary school with recommendations to improve same and causal factors.
• ·      Presentations to government agencies, NGOs, political bodies, and universities in Peru.
• ·      If in funded position, supervise/receive other students working with the project and provide orientation and assistance.

LDS standards (aka BYU Honor Code standards) must be maintained by applicant during time working with LCF.  Spanish-speaking preferred; if not Spanish-speaking, must be willing to cover cost of translation.  Due to work with children, applicants will need to undergo an appropriate background check at their expense.

Applicants must have university affiliation and be enrolled in a university course to apply.  Those accepted for paid opportunities will be paid through their school or department. All applications will be reviewed by the LCF selection committee in the US.

The President of Peru recently signed a collaborative agreement with a conglomerate of universities from the State of Utah—this contract can be seen in part as an extension of that agreement.

Cause for Hope (CFH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people in developing countries become self-reliant and escape poverty. Our purpose at CFH is to develop a replicable model that can permanently help the most families at the lowest possible cost become self-reliant. We desire “to become the most effective organization in creating lasting self-reliance in the lives of thousands of families and their communities in developing countries.”

CFH has developed and used a mentoring process to assist its clients to achieve self-reliance. This has been in operation in all 18 of its field offices. The mentoring process is vital in assisting clients to learn and apply basic business principles in their own business activities. As CFH prepares to embark on a very aggressive growth plan, it is extremely important to ensure that the process is easy to learn, implement and deliver on a large scale basis. This pilot project will evaluate the mentors, the mentoring materials, the process itself, the clients, and the continuous improvement capability. We will also experiment with mentoring in groups, and the use of volunteer and paid mentors.

The mentoring evaluation project will be conducted in four offices. Two are existing offices with proven Office Managers. The other offices will be opened concurrently with the implementation of this pilot program. This will require the completion of a number of mentoring modules that will be provided to these offices, and then examined for their effectiveness in assisting clients to become self-reliant.

CFH will perform an evaluation of its mentoring program in some of its offices in Piura - Peru, Guatemala – Retalhuleu, Chinandega – Nicaragua, and Choluteca – Honduras beginning July and will end in December. We need four BYU interns to assist us in two offices. They will be involved in the first two months of the project.

They will develop a tracking/reporting system to maintain current volunteer providers through familiarizing themselves with our current data management system. They will create 3-5 retention oriented activities for our volunteer providers by identifying those things that encourage continuous involvement. 
• They will increase awareness of our volunteer provider network and CHC’s programs among community partners and improve our programs sustainability. They will implement this awareness by researching grant opportunities, writing and managing grants and carrying out alternative models for increasing the sustainability of our VPN. 
• VISTA will start on August 6-9 in Provo UT.
