Cause for Hope (CFH) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people in developing countries become self-reliant and escape poverty. Our purpose at CFH is to develop a replicable model that can permanently help the most families at the lowest possible cost become self-reliant. We desire “to become the most effective organization in creating lasting self-reliance in the lives of thousands of families and their communities in developing countries.”

CFH has developed and used a mentoring process to assist its clients to achieve self-reliance. This has been in operation in all 18 of its field offices. The mentoring process is vital in assisting clients to learn and apply basic business principles in their own business activities. As CFH prepares to embark on a very aggressive growth plan, it is extremely important to ensure that the process is easy to learn, implement and deliver on a large scale basis. This pilot project will evaluate the mentors, the mentoring materials, the process itself, the clients, and the continuous improvement capability. We will also experiment with mentoring in groups, and the use of volunteer and paid mentors.

The mentoring evaluation project will be conducted in four offices. Two are existing offices with proven Office Managers. The other offices will be opened concurrently with the implementation of this pilot program. This will require the completion of a number of mentoring modules that will be provided to these offices, and then examined for their effectiveness in assisting clients to become self-reliant.

CFH will perform an evaluation of its mentoring program in some of its offices in Piura - Peru, Guatemala – Retalhuleu, Chinandega – Nicaragua, and Choluteca – Honduras beginning July and will end in December. We need four BYU interns to assist us in two offices. They will be involved in the first two months of the project.

An AmeriCorps VISTA position is open in Orem to help create program sustainability through the development of the FRIENDS for the Empowerment of Children and Families.  This VISTA is needed to help support a group of committed, passionate volunteers; write grants to provide future services for children and families at risk of abuse, neglect, and other traumatic experiences; and bring greater awareness and education regarding the effects of child abuse to political and business leaders, and to the community at large.

Volunteer Provider Network Coordinator VISTA Description: 

• Community Health Connects VISTA will recruit new doctors and dentists to the Volunteer Provider Network. They will develop a strategy to recruit and procure a list and map of potential providers in Utah County. They will create marketing material for recruitment which will include a consistent mailing strategy. They will develop a tracking/reporting system to maintain current volunteer providers through familiarizing themselves with our current data management system. They will create 3-5 retention oriented activities for our volunteer providers by identifying those things that encourage continuous involvement. 
• They will increase awareness of our volunteer provider network and CHC’s programs among community partners and improve our programs sustainability. They will implement this awareness by researching grant opportunities, writing and managing grants and carrying out alternative models for increasing the sustainability of our VPN. 
• VISTA will start on August 6-9 in Provo UT.

We are looking to hire 2-3 CUBs over the next few weeks. They must be able to work for at least the next 6 months (especially over spring and summer terms). 

A job description is as follows:

The goal of the Utah County Department of Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment is to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of alcohol and drug use in Utah County. We are looking to hire 2-3 Covert Underage Buyers (CUBs) to take part in prevention through participating in compliance checks of grocery, convenience, and drug stores that sell alcohol for off-premise consumption. CUBs attempt to purchase alcohol in these stores to check if the cashier will ask for ID and deny the sale. 

We are interested in hiring 2-3 new CUBs to help with ongoing compliance checks. This position should not be relied on as a part-time job as the hours are inconsistent from week to week (typically between 0-5).

Some of the requirements for the position are listed below.

·         Must show a commitment to preventing underage drinking.

·         Must be older than 18 and younger than 20 and a half.

·         Must have a valid driver’s license.

·         Must be willing to buy alcohol without lying.

·         Must be available at least 2 days a week in the late afternoon and evening

o   Most checks happen at 4:00 pm or later on weekdays, however, some weekends may be needed.

o   The length of the checks can vary from 1-6 hours.

·         Must be able to commit to at least 6 months of work as a CUB

o   Those who can commit to longer periods of time will be given higher consideration.

·         Must have transportation to meet at the Health and Justice Building (151 S University Avenue, Ste 3200).

The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with CDC Development Solutions and Management Systems International. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency's immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.

Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency's ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.  

INTRODUCTION:

The Nutrition and Food Security intern will be assigned to the Nutrition Division, Office of Health, Infectious Disease and Nutrition, Global Health Bureau, with rotations to the Bureau for Food Security, Office of Country Strategies and Implementation/Technical Division and Office of Agricultural Research and Policy. The intern will contribute to objectives of both Presidential initiatives: Global Health and Feed the Future.

Through Feed the Future (FTF) and the Global Health Initiative (GHI), the United States is supporting country-owned programs to address the root causes of undernutrition and improve the future potential of millions of people. Nutrition is integrated in both initiatives to ensure mothers and young children have access to nutritious food and quality health services. USAID uses evidence-based approaches to ensure good nutrition and supports innovative new approaches that will improve outcomes for the most vulnerable populations.

USAID is pleased to be part of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) global movement, which encourages increased political commitment and programmatic alignment to accelerate reductions in global hunger and undernutrition, and promotes a focus on the 1,000 day window of opportunity from pregnancy to a child's second birthday.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepare reports, concept/position papers, correspondence/briefers/talking points, and other documentation related to nutrition and food security as requested.
• Review and comment on draft documents (e.g., Implementing Partners' implementation plans, annual reports, fact sheets, and research briefs).
• Support analytic and knowledge management work concerning nutrition, public health, gender, poverty, and food security as directed, and assist in presenting findings to relevant audiences.
• Perform administrative and program/project assistance functions as needed for nutrition and BFS teams supporting Washington and country-based activities., e.g. SPRING, FANTA, GAIN, NCRSP, Child Blindness, etc.
• Provide support for USAID's global leadership with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement and the 1000 Days Partnership as requested.
• Participate in developing/strengthening the nutrition component of FTF research programs, as needed.
• Collaborate on FTF nutrition-related capacity building activities (e.g., assist in: planning the CAADP Southern Africa Regional Nutrition Workshop, developing agriculture-nutrition online course, and preparing training reference materials).
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming needs, and the intern's interests and skill set.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualified candidates will be enrolled in, or a *recent graduate of, a graduate program related to public health, nutrition, agriculture, food policy, international development or a related field.

Qualified candidates will have strong writing and analytic skills, strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, and good data analytical skills. Experience or interest working in resource-challenged development settings is preferred but not necessary.

US Citizenship or US Permanent Residency required.
